What we process and why

We process the personal information described in our privacy policy: account and contact details, residential and delivery addresses, auction activity, invoices and payment records, and technical information recorded with bids. We use it to run your account and our auctions, verify your identity before you bid, invoice and deliver, prevent fraud, and meet our legal obligations.

Is it voluntary?

You choose whether to register. Your name, email address, mobile number and password are needed to open an account, and your residential address is needed before you can bid. If you do not provide them we cannot let you register or bid. Optional emails are only sent with your consent.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • be told when your personal information is collected and why;
  • ask whether we hold personal information about you and request a copy of it (section 23);
  • ask us to correct, update or delete information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, excessive or no longer needed (section 24);
  • object to processing based on our legitimate interests (section 11(3));
  • withdraw consent you have given, for example for optional emails;
  • not receive direct marketing by electronic communication without your consent (section 69);
  • be told if your information has been accessed by an unauthorised person (section 22);
  • complain to the Information Regulator.

How to make a request

  • Email our information officer and say what you would like us to do. You can update most details yourself in your account.
  • We will ask you to confirm your identity before we act, so that nobody else can obtain or change your information.
  • We will respond within 30 days. If we cannot do what you ask, for example because the law requires us to keep certain records, we will explain why.
  • Requests about your own information are free.

Transfers outside South Africa

Some of our service providers, such as our email delivery and hosting providers, may process information outside South Africa. We only transfer information where the recipient is bound by law or agreement to protect it to a standard comparable to POPIA (section 72).

Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to keep your information safe, including encrypted connections, hashed passwords and access limited to staff who need it. If we believe your information has been accessed without authorisation, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as soon as reasonably possible.

Complaints

Please contact us first so that we can try to resolve your concern. You may also lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) through its website, inforegulator.org.za.
